1995_hofer_bauhaus dessauArtist:
Candida Höfer (born 1944 in Eberswalde, Germany; lives and works in Cologne, Germany).

Materials:
C-print; 38.2 x 38.3 cm.

Description:
Color photograph of the interior of the Bauhaus in Dessau. Typical of Höfer’s work in that it shows an interior space, rather than the exterior totality.

“Time appears frozen. The cracks in the floor contrast curiously with the unblemished white of the walls and appear thus to have been consciously preserved. They could be an authentic remnant for the thirties. What we see is a tended monument that leaves no trace to indicate a life in the present as a school of creative design. Even the open ventilation flap refers more to the maintenance of the building than to its use.”
