Description:
A series of drawings depicting Bauhaus architecture on blue backgrounds.

“Against a blue background, a collection of work produced in 1995 and 1996 depicts images of iconic buildings from the history of architecture designed by renowned Bauhaus names like Gropius or Hannes Meyer, built in Dessau and in Bernau. The titles of these works in various languages (English, Italian, French) connect to Sarmento’s searching for his roots in the history of modernity. The paintings of these years brings together various modernist cultural references transferred to the dimension of the intimate, elliptical gesture inscribed on the painting’s white surface.”
—João Fernandes, “Indoors,” in Julião Sarmento: White Nights: A Retrospective (Berlin: Hatje Cantz Verlag, 2013), 18-19.
